The role

As a Characterisation Chemist, you will be responsible for analytical testing, laboratory method development, and quality activities to support manufacturing and process development programmes. Working closely with technical and operational teams, you will ensure testing is carried out accurately and efficiently whilst maintaining compliance with laboratory and quality standards.

Key responsibilities:

• Develop and optimise analytical test methods, including ICP-OES techniques
• Prepare samples, standards, and calibration solutions for analysis
• Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment
• Plan, coordinate, and perform laboratory testing activities
• Analyse data, interpret results, and communicate findings
• Maintain laboratory records and technical documentation
• Support laboratory compliance and quality management activities
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and process development projects

What we're looking for:

• Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory environment
• Strong analytical chemistry experience, including ICP-OES methodologies
• Experience with metal digestion techniques using hot plate and/or microwave methods
• Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy
• Strong understanding of laboratory quality standards and compliance requirements
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• A proactive and hands-on approach with a willingness to support a growing business

Desirable experience:

• Degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline
• Experience developing and validating analytical methods
• Experience within advanced manufacturing, metals, materials, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, or process industries
• Knowledge of quality control and continuous improvement methodologies

Location

Primarily based at the company's Birmingham site in Tyseley, with occasional travel to a second Birmingham location as required. Candidates should be flexible and willing to work across both sites depending on business needs.
