G&P 's Quality Director announces investment in AI technology

Leading international quality group G&P is taking its visual inspection capabilities to the next level by investing in state-of-the-art AI-supported vision inspection system technology. With the aim of increasing inspection speed, accuracy, and efficiency, the technology further accelerates the company’s progress in the drive towards zero defects across the automotive, off-highway, defence, aerospace, and household goods industries.

Capable of inspecting a wide range of parts within a 2.7m x 2.0m envelope (SF to confirm), the pioneering technology processes components through an inspection cycle without the need for consistent part placement and inspection environment conditions. Discriminating between ‘OK’ and ‘NOK’ components in milliseconds without the need to adjust position, defects can be detected consistently and accurately in real world manufacturing environments Providing the ability to autonomously check multiple components in a single scan, AI supported inspection can immediately identify missing components, flag incorrect installation and count features under even the toughest conditions.

Ultimately capable of significantly reducing the risk of error, harnessing AI to inspect components can deliver process efficiencies while achieving highly accurate results. This makes the technology perfect for use in visual inspection applications where failure to detect an NOK part would result in major downstream risk or disruption.

Simon Francis, Group Quality Director, said: “Investing in AI-supported inspection technology is the latest in a long line of strategic decisions that aim to further improve our processes and provide our customers with unmatched service levels, supporting them in achieving manufacturing targets and ultimately protecting the reputation of the brand.

“Indeed, when compared to human visual inspection, AI is faster, more reliable, and ultimately delivers more accurate results overall. While the technology has its limitations and is no direct replacement for skilled workers, it will undoubtedly play an important role in visual inspection processes moving forward.

“As we continue to build upon firm foundations to strengthen our service offering, expand our international footprint as we continue to accelerate towards our ambitious growth plans, investing in pioneering technologies like AI will help to maintain our position at the forefront of the quality management marketplace.”
